How Do You Get To Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park is located in a small village called Musanze in the northern region of Rwanda. When flying from abroad, most travellers enter Rwanda through Kigali International Airport (KGL). The airport is located about 10 kilometers from Kigali city, Rwanda’s capital. Airlines servicing Kigali International Airport are; RwandAir, Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, KLM, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines
Your local Rwanda tour operator will usually arrange for you to be picked at the airport and will take care of all further transportation as part of your Rwanda tour package.
There are no scheduled domestic flights to Volcanoes National Park and most travellers access the park by road.
Rwanda Road Trip To Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park is located about 106 kilometers (2-3 hours’ drive) from Kigali city. From Kigali, the park can be accessed through Tumba, Ruhondo and Musanze. Musanze is about 12 km (30 minutes’ drive) to Volcanoes National Park.
Traveller to Volcanoes can do gorilla trekking on the same day and drive back to Kigali. A 4×4 safari vehicle is perfect for the trip. Volcanoes National Park is as well very accessible by public transport from Gisenyi or Kigali.
From Uganda, the park can be accessed through Chanika border in Kisori. Chanika through Kidaho to Kinigi to Volcanoes National Park is about 37km and takes about a 48 minutes’ drive.
Volcanoes National Park can also be accessed by road through Goma border point which is located next to Rwanda’s Gisenyi in the Easern Democratic Republic of Congo. Gisenyi is about 8 km (23 minutes from Goma).
A drive from Gisenyi, through Rubavu, Mukamira, Mukingo, Kingi to Volcanoes National Park takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes (73km).
All participants in any activity at the park must report to the park headquarters in Kinigi by 7am. Therefore, it is recommended to stay close to the park, or in nearby Musanze.
